Gameplay

Baccarat is an easy card game to learn. However, mastering the game might take some time. Play at your own pace. If a table moves too fast for your liking, move to a different table.

In Baccarat there three possible outcomes to the game: the player can win, the banker can win or both the player and the banker can tie. In addition to winning money as the player, people make a game out of betting on which of these two people will win the hand. The game is one of the few casino games where the odds of the banker winning are only slightly higher than the odds of the player winning. The odds of the banker winning tend to be about 1 to 2% higher than the player winning. The odds of the player having a tie with the banker are very low, but they pay out nicely!.

There are really no decisions to make in Baccarat once the bets are placed and the cards are dealt. In this sense, it doesn’t make much difference whether you are playing as the player with the cards on the table or just betting as another player.

After the bets are placed the game will begin. When the game begins the dealer will set out two hands of cards, one to the player and another to the banker.

When the cards are dealt, they are dealt face up. The dealer will then declare if one hand is a natural. A natural hand will win the game instantly. Natural hands are discussed in a later section. If neither hand wins then more cards need to be dealt.

The winner is the player whose hand is closest to nine.

Rules

Since the winner of Baccarat is the person with the hand that is closest to 9 points then we should establish the point values assigned to each card:

  • Face cards and 10’s = 0 points
  • Aces = 1 point
  • Cards numbered 2 through 9 = the number on the card

Another rule that is important to note when playing any version of Baccarat in casinos is that it is not possible to have a hand that is valued above 9 points. If the value exceeds 9 points, then the first digit of the total sum of cards is dropped from the point total. Here’s an example: Say you are dealt a 9 and a 7. You would think the point total would be 16, right? Wrong. the first digit is dropped, so you really have 6 points.

Natural Hands

In the beginning of the game, after the cards are dealt one player can win automatically by getting dealt a natural hand. Natural hands are big winners in Baccarat! A natural hand is when the total amount from both cards equals 8 or 9 points without needing further cards. If one player is dealt a natural hand then the other player loses automatically!

Rules on when the house will hit are different for every casino. Typically, players will be forced to stand on a 6. The house will stand on a 7. If a player’s score is lower than 6, then they must receive a hit. If the house’s score is 1, 2 or 0 then they will also receive a hit. There are variations to these rules depending upon the form of Baccarat, but it should be easy to figure out from playing a few hands.

Payoffs may vary slightly for different casinos, as well. Typically, payoffs for betting on the player are even money, 1 to 1. Betting on the banker is even money, 1 to 1. Betting on a tie is a much greater payoff of 1 to 8.

History of Baccarat

Some parts of the history of Baccarat are well known, others are disputed and many key facts have yet to be uncovered. This mystery is what makes researchers continue to be intrigued in solving the case of how Baccarat was created and evolved into the game so many casinos showcase today. It is well known throughout the world. People of all nationalities and countries of origin take part in the gambling sensation known as Baccarat. Both old and new players, young and old will enjoy this version brought to you today by OCW. Take pride in knowing you are playing a game with ancient roots and an intriguing past. Relish in the fact that many have entered the game and you may succeed knowing the rules and strategies. At least you will be able to amuse your friends with some interesting facts about the game… Let’s begin with the ancient origins of Baccarat…

Ancient Origins

Researchers have often wondered where exactly Baccarat has evolved from, which culture, which land was its home. They have speculated some about the ancient origins of this widely popular card game. Some researchers tie Baccarat to ancient Roman civilizations and their unusual traditions, practices which seem rather archaic in today’s world. Others speculate that Baccarat was born in Chinese civilizations. Some even connect Baccarat to the ancient Egyptians.

Romans played a game of fate and in some cases death. The game was played with dice, a nine-sided die to be exact. The nine-sides to the die would give suspicion to researchers that this game evolved to become the Baccarat we play today, however, this game had much more serious outcomes than gambling addictions. In fact, the ancient Roman tradition required that a vestal virgin be given a chance to leave her way of life, forever. A roll of the die would determine which was her life-path would go. Of course, this Roman game of fate was no laughing matter. A roll of an 8 or 9 on the die would mean the woman would become a high priestess and viewed with honor for the remainder of her years. A 6 or 7 of the die would mean that she would no longer keep the status of vestal virgin. Then, if the woman casts a lower number than a 6, she would be forced to walk out into the sea and drown herself. I guess pit-bosses at casinos were tougher back then!

Other researchers, instead, proffer speculation that Baccarat evolved from the ancient Chinese in a game called Pai Gow. Many modern casinos in Asia, Australia, North America and other parts of the world play a newer version of Pai Gow. The game is said to have remained mostly the same over thousands of years, which is likely true due to traditions instilled in Chinese culture. Pai Gow literally translates to English as “make nine,” so it is easy to understand why some researchers insist that Pai Gow was the beginning of Baccarat. The game of Pai Gow can take years to learn and a lifetime to master. It is played with 32 Chinese dominos, and they can be assembled to make 32,960 combinations. Many people remember winning combinations by learning a story that associates the pairs of dominos with the creation of the universe.

New Beginnings

Though it is open for speculation where the game originated from, it is an accepted fact by most researchers that Baccarat appeared in Italy in sometime between the year 1,200 and 1,300 A.D. There are some written records that indicate that Baccarat may have been attributed to the brave explorer who circumnavigated the globe, Marco Polo. He is given credit for, among many other things, bringing Pai Gow from China to Italy. Pai Gow was played on tiles in ancient China. Then when the brilliant invention of the printing press came into being from Johannes Gutenberg, Italy had the means to create paper cards. The very same year that the first Bible rolled off the presses so did packs of playing cards, with 78 cards originally. They were called The Devil’s Picture Books by some that opposed gaming rituals. The first historical document in Italy to mention card games was recorded in the mid-14th century.

Baccarat in Modern Times

In 1931 Las Vegas, Nevada passed an Assembly Bill which gave the right for gambling to occur in the state. This bill legalized gambling in casinos. Casinos could offer blackjack, craps, keno, stud poker and many other widely popular games, but not Baccarat, not yet… Two forms of modern day Baccarat came about nearly at the same time, in the late 1950’s. Today, Las Vegas recognizes over 20 variations upon the game of Baccarat.

For this reason alone it is worth looking at all the variations, studying them, noting their differences and seeing which one you are good at!
